Biography[]

Conception & Birth[]

Meeting Francis and Mickey[]

In the early 60's, she met Francis while performing for a show called Hope & Rape, a show about a model named Hope and a rapist named Rape sharing a city apartment as Rape struggles to control himself. While Thelma thinks of it as a funny thing to laugh about nowadays, Francis has shown active embarrassment over it, admitting he only did it because of him being low on money.

Late on around the mid 60's she met Mickey McFinnigan, who became her girlfriend. A few years afterwards, revealed in "Padre de Familia", Mickey took Thelma to an extreme bull fighting show. At the show, Mickey took Thelma into the port-a-potty with her and knocked her up, impregnating her with Peter, and then left the day after, never calling her again.

Birth to Peter[]

Peter as a Newborn Baby

Months later, Thelma decided to get an abortion, so she went to Mexico, to have the illegal procedure done at Embryo Bell. However, at this point in the pregnancy, the baby was too developed and it was too late for an abortion, despite her only being pregnant for six months and Peter was prematurely born there on the spot. When Thelma saw her newborn child, she thought he was beautiful and wanted to raise him and care for him, so he could live a full life. So, she went back to America. However, she was too embarassed about what happened to tell anyone about it, so she never filled out the proper files to legally make Peter into an American citizen, so he technically remained an illegal immigrant for most of his life.

Not wanting Peter to grow up without a father, Thelma married Francis and passed him off as Peter's biological father, throughout his entire childhood, not telling Peter the actual truth.

Retirement/Divorce[]

Death[]

In "Roads to Vegas"

Appearance[]

Personality[]

Thelma is the sweeter, nicer parent of Peter. Playing the nice to Francis' mean. She took care of her son throughout her whole life without much help from Francis, who was often verbally abusive to Peter. She attended many of Peter's parent-teacher conferences, as seen in "And the Wiener Is ...", shown to embrace what Peter's doing out of love and even stand against Francis' harsh treatment of Peter despite her love for him. She's also shown to be one of the few people to be able to show Francis' more nicer side. As seen in the episodes they're together, Francis shows a more playful side when with Thelma.

Despite her nicer demeanor, Thelma has shown at times that she can be just as - if not worse - at parenting than Francis. She has shown to have an alcoholic nature that leads to several childhood accounts of her being abusive or neglectful to Peter, and Francis mostly having to play damage control. Such examples include when she threw whiskey bottles at Peter as seen in flashbacks in "Mind Over Murder" and "Power Over Peter", and in the latter's case also included a scene where she threw one so close to him that if Francis didn't move Peter out of the way could've severely harmed him. She's also not innocent in insulting Peter the same way Francis does. Though while Francis' is more to insult his weight and call him "a fat stinkin' drunk", Thelma tends to more insult him with mind games that boil down to telling Peter she thinks he's worthless and could be so much more. Thelma also has a bit of a dependency on smoking, as shown in "Power Over Peter", smoking is the big reason she tolerates Francis or Peter's crap at all. And when she doesn't have at least one smoke chain a day, she snaps and loses it on anything and anyone who crosses her. She's also known for being slightly neglectful to Peter and Francis sometimes. Usually leaving the two often to going on gambling streaks in Las Vegas for days on end, as seen in "Holy Crap" and "The Father, The Son, and The Holy Fonz". And when she does bring company, she's not above backstabbing them, as Peter revealed in "The Guyfathers" that one time she stole money from both of them while the three were at Las Vegas just to have another try at a poker table.

Relationships[]

Family[]

  • Peter Griffin - Thelma is the mother of Peter Griffin and a very loving mother, who treats him with kindness and respect as though he wasn't an idiot.
  • Francis Griffin - Thelma married Francis after Mickey McFinnigan dumped her so that Peter could grow up with a father. Despite the odd paring of a sweet lady married to a religious asshole, she cares about Francis and Francis cares for her back. Even though they did not have a lasting marriage, as somewhere down the line they divorced, they still keep on friendly terms.
  • Lois Griffin - One of her closest friends. While both had a bit of a rivalry alongside Peter and Francis, they grew to have a friendship and actually respect each other now.

Episode Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Thelma was originally voiced by Florence Stanley for the first two seasons of the show but starting with Season 3, the crew thought Florence didn't fit Thelma's new personality and had Phyllis Diller replace her, who voiced her until her death.
  • Her first two appearances had slight differences to her design. Her hair was more of a darker grey, wore light-purple instead of blue and had purple earrings compared to her usual yellow earrings.
