Series 2 is the second run of Family Guy, consisting of only the fourth season. It premiered on April 29th, 2003 with "Family Guy: Live in Vegas" and ended on March 14th, 2004 with "Stu & Stewie's Excellent Adventure".
History
Continuing from the previous run, Family Guy was cancelled in early 2001 due to low ratings. Fox tried to sell rights for reruns of the show, but it was hard to find networks that were interested; Cartoon Network eventually bought the rights, "[...] basically for free", according to the president of 20th Century Fox Television Production.
When the reruns were shown on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in late 2001, Family Guy became Adult Swim's most-watched show with an average 1.9 million viewers an episode. Following Family Guy's high ratings on Adult Swim, the first three seasons were released on DVD in April 2002. Sales of the DVD set reached 2.2 million copies, becoming the best-selling television DVD of 2002 and the second highest-selling television DVD ever, behind the first season of Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show. The show's popularity in both DVD sales and reruns rekindled Fox's interest in it. They ordered 26 new episodes, along with an additional special, in 2002, marking the first revival of a television show based on DVD sales. Fox president Gail Berman said that it was one of her most difficult decisions to cancel the show, and was therefore happy it would return. The network also began production of a film based on the series.
Family Guy's second run unofficially premiered on April 29th, 2003, with "Live in Vegas", a double length musical, to gain back buzz in the show. The show debuted to 11 million viewers. The show officially returned on May 4th, 2003, with "North by North Quahog". Like before, Family Guy garnered decent ratings in Fox's 8:30 PM slot on Sunday. However, FOX began to toy with the time slot, moving it from 7 to 9 PM, and the series' ratings declined sharply. Subsequently, Fox began airing episodes irregularly and make the show go on multiple hiatuses'. Leading to Fox announcing that the show had been canceled yet again in February 2004, around the end of the fourth season and around the time the movie, "Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story" was releasing, with the movie being the finale to the show and it would be cancelled "for good".
