Synopsis[]
When Stan Thompson shows off his fishing boat and job to the Griffins, Peter decides to rival Stan and rebuilds a replica of his old boat to return to the sea. Meanwhile, Preston, after Peter quits his job to be a fisherman again, tries to find a new employee to take Peter's old job.
Plot[]
The Griffin Family head to the pier for an annual event. There, Brian asks Lois for some money as he wants when he sees one of his current dates at the pier, as Brian lied to her and told her he was a fancy rich guy to get her attention, and Lois begruntle gives him some. And while Lois hints to Brian that a real person would get a job and get the money himself, Brian ignores her to go after his girlfriend.
Meanwhile, while looking at the docks to see the fishermen out at sea, Peter and Meg runs into Stan Thompson, who's finally got a stable job and permanent home and setting up shop around the pier with his new boat/house he got called the S.S. Thompson and shows the two around the boat, which Peter mostly scoffs at. Stan also mentions the boat will also help him with his new job as he recently got hired to be a fisherman by Hennessey, Peter's old fisherman boss. As Hennessey goes to greet Stan, he jokes about his past with Peter and how he'll bet Stan will go farther than Peter ever did. Embarrassed, Peter angrily storms off.
Later on, at the Drunken Clam, Peter vents his depression at this to the guys and how this made him realize he's working at a dead-end job while everyone else he knows has more fulfilling and happier jobs, and that even his friends don't feel right for cheering him up, considering their jobs are way better and cooler than his - Quagmire being a pilot and Joe being a Police Officer - and the only one who seems right is Cleveland, considering his mailman job puts him on equal level of un-coolness as Peter... until Cleveland reveals he entered an echochamber on Twitter where he has gotten a new job as a black nationalist for a group called The Black Pumas, which bumps him higher on the job scale. With this realization of Cleveland being able to bounce from a low job to a higher job, Peter - alongside help with the guys - works hard to build a replica of his old boat through a montage that he calls: The Revamped S.S. More Powerful Than Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and the Incredible Hulk Put Together.
While Peter's off working off harder than he usually does, Brian's continually spending his money on his credit card to impress his girlfriend on how rich he is. And by "his money", he means "Lois' money", and by "his credit card" he means "a credit card linked to the family bank account". He ends up reaching a breaking point for Lois when she receives a bill from the bank from Brian's spending (some of his items being fancy dresses, rings and plane tickets to Miami), and she furiously cuts him off the family account, just as he's about to pay in advance for a fancy diner he took his date to, leading to her finding out he's a scam and dumping him, noting how she's shallow, but not that shallow.
With his new boat, he begins to plan how he'll walk out on the brewery, thinking he'll make a huge scene that shows his true feelings about the job. But while thinking deeply about it, does notice how much good has come from the job with the multiple bosses and co-workers he's met and has second thoughts about quitting. Those thoughts are short-lived when his boss Preston Lloyd comes and announces to Peter he's cutting his pay due to budget cuts. Peter almost immediately does his plans and quits the job on his high note.
As Peter goes off to his fisherman job, Brian goes to Lois to complain about him being cut off the family account, leading her to rant at Brian for her being sick of Brian mooching off the family and never buying anything with his own money, especially since Brian's a 70-year-old dog in human years yet Chris and Meg (who are teenagers or) are not bugging for money and make their own money elsewhere. So Lois cuts him off from the account meaning he can't make purchases or pay for gas. Meaning Brian has to start finding a new stable job.
Peter takes his new boat to the pier and is able to get his fisherman job back, while making sure to rub it in Stan and Hennessey's faces that he's back. Hennessey however tells Peter that he only really has one spot for a fisherman open, so he and Stan would need to fight for it and would have 60 hours to prove the rightful fisherman.
As Peter and Stan push themselves to keep their new job, with help from the Beer Bar Buddies and Meg respectively, Brian's going off job searching and to say it was challenging is putting it lightly. Writing was not a job option that he was allowed, previous jobs he had don't allow him back and the one place he had some success in - the Suicide Hotline - is in shambles and close to unworkable. At the same time, with Peter quitting his job, the brewery is missing its shipping manager. Leaving Preston to find a new worker to take Peter's crappy place at the brewery. Unfortunately, nobody is willing to take the job, with most seeing it as a dead-end job.
As the final day come upon the two fisherman, Peter is determined to prove to Hennessey he's worth keeping again. So in a last-ditch effort, Peter and the guys head back to Pelican’s Reef to catch a helload of fish. Unfortunately, Stan was given the same idea by advice from Seamus, and so the two compete for the most fish caught at the area. But during the competition, a hurricane comes upon the two groups and Stan's about to have his boat wrecked due to having no gas to escape. Peter thinks about leaving him, but remembering being in the same situation Stan was in, decides to help him and attaches a latch to his boat to drag it along to save it from wreckage.
As they head back to the pier, the two decide to put a truce to the competition and say they both won. However, to both surprise, Hennessey revealed he was messing with the two and was going to give them both the job. Angry at being tricked, Peter and Stan put a truce to tie up Hennessey on a boat as payback for messing with them. Around that time, Brian comes across an ad for help wanted at the Pawtucket Brewery and take it. And ends up winning the job, though the context Brian missed is that Preston dealt with a lot of nutcases or unwanters, so Brian was the best one in comparison.
