Carter Roosevelt Pewterschmidt (born March 21, 1932) is one of the major antagonists (alongside Ernie the Giant Chicken) of the series. He's a stereotypical conservative billionaire who's the husband of Babs Pewterschmidt, the father of Lois, Carol and Patrick - alongside the recently adopted Tatum, the father-in-law of Peter and Adam West and the maternal grandfather of Meg, Chris, Stewie and Robin.
Biography[]
Carter made his big debut in "Peter's in Charge", when Lois went to visit him and Babs as a getaway from her rut in life. During the episode, Carter showcased his traits most common with him. In a cutaway gag, he shows his gleeful sadism he does to Peter, and throughout the episode he and Babs try to get Lois to be unfaithful to Peter by hiring men to flirt and give advances to Lois while she's at their mansion. Unfortunately, Lois realized the ruse and rightfully called her parents out before leaving.
In "Road to Rhode Island", Stewie was sent to stay with Carter and Babs in Palm Springs and clearly didn't enjoy it. His nightmare was over when Brian came to pick him up.
In "Screwed the Pooch", Carter had a pet dog named Seabreeze, who he entered into the dog race. He got really mad at Brian when he had sex with her.
In "Peter Griffin: Husband, Father, ... Brother?", Carter accidentally revealed that one of his great ancestors was a slave owner, who owned Nate Griffin, the great ancestor of Peter Griffin, technically making it part of their family history that The Pewterschmidt Family owned The Griffin Family.
In a flashback in "Death Lives", Carter showed to hate Peter from day 1 and offered him $1,000,000 if he didn't marry Lois, which Peter rejected.
A running gag is Carter forcing Peter to do things that would amuse him in order for Peter to get help. Such as in "Model Misbehavior" when he forced Peter to eat a pinecone and making him describe how it tastes, or in "Padre de Familia" when he ordered Peter to drink a vial of his diabetic blood or else he was fired.,
In "Peterotica" Peter decides to write his own erotic novels, and goes to Carter to ask for him to lend him some money to get his business open. Instead Carter gives him five dollars at the bottom of a jar filled with salt and barbed wire. Peter is able to properly invest that five dollars to get his novels off the ground; having his books published by "Carter Pewterschmidt Labels". Peter's erotic novels become a success, earning money for Carter and Peter and eventually getting published on audiotape. However, Carter runs into trouble because a motorist was listening to one of Peter's audiotapes, which distracted him and caused him to crash through Kool-Aid Man's house. Carter is then sued as he was the one who underwrote Peter's erotic novels. A lawyer, Scott Greenberg came by Carter's house stating that he was going to take all of Carters property and money. Carter turns around and asks that he can if he can survive Rancor. Carter quickly turns around and hits a switch, causing the collector to fall through a cement block.
After losing the lawsuit, Carter loses his money and his lifestyle, and goes to live with his daughter.
In episodes such as "Bill & Peter's Bogus Journey" and "You May Now Kiss the Uh ... Guy Who Receives", it is made clear that Barbara and Carter married because Carter was rich. However, in "Welcome Back, Carter", it is revealed that Barbara and Carter had fallen in love before they married. It is also revealed that Carter is a war veteran, and he and Barbara exchanged letters, and when that ceased, Carter was presumed dead. At a party Barbara and her new fiancé Roginald attended, he crashed it, and the two reaffirmed their love, sealed by a marriage proposal. However, in the latter episode, Carter was caught in an affair, and though Barbara demanded a divorce, the two are still living in the same household. It is also hinted in the same story that he abused Lois as a child, as when he is woken up by Barbara he mumbles that he is just taking Lois' temperature.
Appearance[]
Carter has persimmon like skin, gray hair, including a mustache, a blue suit, with a white collared shirt under it, and black shoes. In his past debut's he has been shown with brown hair instead of white. When he is not wearing his usual tuxedo, he is wearing a light blue collared shirt and tan khaki pants.
Personality[]
Though many things can be said about Carter, it usually simplifies down to him being an asshole. Carter is a typical high-class rich prick, who looks down on and laughs at the poor and middle class. Sometimes, Carter goes out of his way to actively pull immature pranks to disturb or inconvenience people who are less rich than him just so that he can have a good laugh. However, when it comes to Lois, he still loves and cares for her deeply and would never dream of hurting her, despite the fact that she's currently living a middle class life. The only qualm he has with Lois is the fact that she married such an idiot and would be very proud of her if she dumped him. Nevertheless, he still supports his daughter even if he completely disrespects Peter. Carter has also exhibited racism against blacks and hispanics as well as bigotry against Jews. He is shown to have a bunch of overworked and underpaid migrant workers from South American countries helping him out around the house, who he is exceptionally rude to. Some flashbacks have also proven that Carter used to have black domestic workers.
While it seems Carter is a textbook Karma Houdini who he never receives any punishment for his horrible actions (including withholding the cure for cancer, keeping black servants without paying them and keeping sex slaves), he has had karma hit him hard. Peter has been the most frequent one to knock Carter down and give him some sort of karma, either through humiliating him (making him drink expired eggnog and filming him to be shown online in "Christmas Guy"), screwing Carter over intentionally and making his life miserable even if for a little while (bankrupting him from a lawsuit in "Peterotica", stealing his company in "Business Guy", getting him thrown out of his country club in "No Country Club for Old Men"), and giving him a beatdown in "Model Misbehavior" and "The Perfect Castaway". Though other members have given Carter karma themselves, such as Lois blackmailing Carter by bringing up Chucky, Babs hitting him with her purse on multiple occasions and even putting a shock collar on him as punishment for his lack of empathy for Peter's wellbeing while he forced the shock collar on him in "Power Over Peter"
